Why Choose Reverse Osmosis System
There are mainly two methods in order to filter water. The first one is water filtration and the second one is boiling the water.
Water boiling is an ancient method and has been performed by mankind for centuries. However, there are certain problems associated with water boiling. One of the major problems is Volatile Organic Compounds. These are the compounds that have boiling temperature less than water. And as a result, besides being boiled, certain VOC’s may be left in the water.
Another problem with water boiling is that it won’t get rid of the bad taste, odour, sediments, and silts(water boilers being an exception). Thus it is advised to have a filtration system installed.
In a filtration method, a water filter which may comprise, physical, chemical, or biological processes is used to purify water and make it suitable for drinking, irrigation, or other household purposes. One of the most preferred methods around the world is Reverse Osmosis(commonly known as RO) Systems.
Reverse Osmosis Systems are widely used in industries like food & beverages, schools, hospitals, military, pharmaceuticals, and agriculture to ensure water purity. Such large-scale usages indicate the potential of producing purified water of RO systems.
There are certain benefits of using a Reverse Osmosis System. First of all, it produces great tasting water. This system is great at removing foul smells from your drinking water. Hence, it does not only cleanse the water by removes odours too. And the water taste remains intact no matter where you go.
RO Systems are capable of removing all kinds of impurities and contaminants like chemical wastes, bacteria, viruses, fluoride, chlorine, nitrates, and much more from the water. Therefore, we can easily say that RO Water effective and safe for health.
These filters are fully automated. You just have to install them for once and do not have to bother any further. You do not have to command them over and over. However, you’ll have to change the filters inside the RO systems periodically.
Along with everything, RO Systems are rationally priced. One can easily install them from their monthly savings. So all in all, one must install an RO System for better health of their loved ones.
How does Reverse Osmosis System Work?
Reverse Osmosis is a system that is completely opposite to osmosis. In osmosis, water or solution is passed through the semipermeable membrane from low concentrated solution to a higher one. While in Reverse Osmosis systems the solvent is passed through semipermeable membrane opposite to their natural osmosis with pressure.
As a result, it removes all kinds of molecules, ions, and larger particles. Often, certain impurities such as pesticides, chlorine, fluoride, lead, detergents, and nitrates are found in tap water. The RO System effectively removes all such impurities and other contaminants.
All the impurities that are caught with the help of the RO filtration process are flushed down the drain. Also, as the time flies, these filters lose their ability to remove contaminants anymore. And hence, you’ll have to change the filter.
Besides working on the same principle, RO Systems are priced distinctly based on mainly 3 factors. The first one is the number of processes or stages it passed through. The second one is the quality of filters and other components. And the last one is the amount of water the Reverse Osmosis System can filter in a day.

7-stage Reverse Osmosis System
iSpring RCC1UP-AK makes use of first 5 stages to get rid of all the unwanted impuritie very effectively. However, during the process, the water loses a lot of beneficial minerals.
To make up for the lost minerals, stage 6 makes use of Alkaline pH+ Remineralization Filter that remineralizes the water and adds healthy minerals back to the water. This process is almost the same as the spring waters. They just pass through natural minerals and as a result become mineral rich.
Also, here the ph level of the water is neutralized which reaches below 7 due to filtration. This enhances the taste of the water.
Stage 7 comprises UV Sterilizer. A UV Sterilizer is pretty useful to remove impurities from water that has not been treated with chlorine which means the water that comes directly from the natural source and hence may contain a lot of harmful contaminants. UV Sterilizer easily cleans off all the undesirable substance from water. This feature is essential if you receive your water from a bore or well.
Booster Pump
Water pressure varies with the source it comes from. This sometimes hinders the water filtration system as Reverse Osmosis Systems require a certain water pressure to function. With lower than required water pressure, the RO System will not work.

Buyer’s Guide
If you are still confused about which RO System to go with, here are some helpful tips on how you should evaluate each system for your own.
How to Choose the Best Reverse Osmosis System?
If you have already chosen the perfect RO System for yourself, evaluate it using following measures to find out whether it will serve you the best or not.
Dimensions
Most of the RO Filtration Systems on the market currently are Under-Sink systems. These systems come with a setup that goes under your sink and filters the process from down there only. With this filtration system, you are provided with a faucet that is fixed on the counter-top.
Some of the systems may require a larger space and may not fit your space specifications. Thus, it is recommended that you measure whatever space you have under your sink and then choose any particular RO System.
Number of Stages
The number of stages defines the number of distinct systems the water passes through during the filtration process. This number can be anywhere between 3 to 11 for a standard RO Filtration system.
This may seem confusing at first, however, rather than focusing on the number of stages, you should focus on what kind of process is being followed. Typically any 5 stage system will thoroughly purify the water but will remove all the healthy minerals as well. And therefore, 6 stage systems will comprise a remineralization filter.
As the number of stages increases, other filters such as Ultraviolet Filter may be introduced.
Gallons Per Day (GPD)
GPD for any Reverse Osmosis Filtration System can be between 30 to 100. GPD Stands for Gallons per Day. It signifies how much water can the particular system produce in 24 hours. If you have a big family of an office, you may look for a system with higher GPD else any system with a capacity around 50 GPD works fine.
Contaminants Eliminated by Reverse Osmosis Filter
As we are already aware that tap water may contain a lot of pollutants, make sure that your Reverse Osmosis System gets rid of them all. Such contaminants can be TDS which are Totally Dissolved Solids and cannot be seen with a naked eye.
Some of the other contaminants can be VOC, which are Volatile organic compound. These compounds have comparatively lower boiling temperature than water and hence can be found in water that is purified using desalination process. Other threats include Micro-Organisms like Amoeba that can be life-threatening.
Remineralization Filters
Though by the definition, Reverse Osmosis Systems are only required to remove pollutants and contaminants from the water, it is recommended that you invest in one that comes with a Remineralization Filter too.
While getting rid of unwanted substances during Reverse Osmosis Filtration, water loses all the healthy minerals that can help one thrive. Thus, it is recommended that your RO System comes with a Remineralization Filter that adds that missing minerals back into the water. Some of these filters efficiently reoxidize the water for boosted antioxidants and amount of oxygen.
Ultraviolet Filter
If you live in a rural area or feed on the water that comes directly from natural resources like a bore, well, or pond, you may get in contact with life-threatening microorganisms. Simple Reverse Osmosis System will not be able to remove such harmful organisms.
The Ultraviolet Filter effectively purifies such water by removing these micro-organisms and hence purifying the water.
Leak Elimination Technology
An Reverse Osmosis System consists of a lot of tubings and filters. Thus, you likely witness a leak without having a clue about its origin. It can be frustrating to deal with a leak not because it is tough to seal but due to the hardships of finding the root.
Modern Reverse Osmosis Systems come with a leak elimination technology. Basically, most of the systems, nowadays, are equipped with tightly coupled steel teeth. These teeth squeeze the filters and related components together and prevent any likely leakage.
Another solution is a leak detector that automatically turns the system off in case of detecting any moisture or leakage.
With or Without Tank
While the traditional models come with a separate tank, you may choose a modern model that comes with an inbuilt storage tank. Though there may be possible disadvantages like not having enough water in case of a greater need, it really depends on how much water you will need on an average.
Price Tag
Lastly, the most obvious part and that is choosing the price tag that you are comfortable with. Nothing is too pricey or too cheap when it comes to choosing something that greatly deals with your health. So rather than focusing on the price tag, go with something that is beneficial to your health. It will surely prove to be a worthy investment in a short time.
Difference Between a Single Pass and a Double Pass RO System
The basic difference between the single and double pass systems is the number of cycles the water goes through. Consider pass as the number of cycles and you’ll easily understand the difference.
A single pass system follows the whole water filtration cycle for a single time and provides purified water. On the other hand, a double pass system takes this same water and passes it through the same process again and hence providing you with more purified water.
And what about a One-Stage and a Two-stage System?
Reverse Osmosis Systems are long criticized for wasting a lot of water which is associated with one-stage RO Systems. To deal with this problem, two-stage systems were evolved. These systems take the wastewater, filter it once again and add it to the collected purified water in the earlier stage.
How to Install a Reverse Osmosis Water Filter
Here are installation steps explained briefly for a simplified installation of your Reverse Osmosis System. Most of the systems we have mentioned here are under the sink type of systems. Though some systems allow you to install a little far away too, make sure that the system is compatible to work where you are willing to install it.
- First of all, you need to remove the water supply pipe from your faucet.
- Once you have removed the water supply pipe, you need to install the T-Connector along with the push fit connector.
- The next thing you need to do is connecting the wastewater pipe. Drill the waste water pipe from the middle in the horizontal section and install the waste connector.
- Now you need to install the filter system. These systems require periodic filter change so make sure to not to install them in a very confined place.
- Take the water tank and install it below the countertop. Make sure to keep it in level with the ground.
- Now is the time to connect the water pipes. Most of the systems we have reviewed come with colour-coded water pipes so this won’t be a problem and will be done without much hassle.
- Plug-in the system and power it on.
- The last step you are required to do is turn the water supply back on. Also, make sure not to drink the purified water right away. You may need to fill and empty the water tank a few times as specified by your manufacturer. Do look out for this in the user manual.
Reverse Osmosis Systems Maintenance and Filter Change
Reverse Osmosis require you to change the filters every once in a while to ensure that the water gets purified the way it is supposed to be. There is no universal rule about changing the filter as it really depends upon the quality of the filters. However, here are some basic rules that define how often you should change a filter.
The filters that require the most frequent change are the ones that come before Reverse Osmosis Membrane. These filters should be changed every 6 months, though depending upon the quality, they may last up to 1 year. Some of the systems that we reviewed come with a transparent first chamber, which will help you to determine whether your filters need a change or not.
The filters that come after Reverse Osmosis Membrane usually last for a year but may work well up to 2 years depending on the quality.
And finally, the Reverse Osmosis Membrane itself may need to be changed after 2 years but again depending upon your investment, may last up to 4 years.
The EndNote
A Reverse Osmosis System is an essential investment to keep your loved ones and yourself safe from the water contaminants and prevent possible water-borne diseases. It is the healthiest way to purify water and the only one that guarantees to remove all the unwanted impurities.
An RO Filtration System may cost you a couple of hundred bucks at first, however, these machines last for over a decade and of course, keep you and your family healthy and safe. Thus, this is a worthwhile investment without a doubt.
